Ingredients
filling
3
apples, sliced to 1cm thick
2 tbsp
golden caster sugar
topping
175 g
plain flour
110 g
golden caster sugar
1 pinch
salt
110 g
cold butter
1 tbsp
rolled oats
1 tbsp
demerara sugar
4 portions
double cream or custard
Steps
1
Preheat the oven to 190°C.
2
Combine the apples with the golden caster sugar. Tip into a baking dish at least 5cm deep if round, or 20cm wide if square. Press down gently by hand so the crumble doesn't fall through.
3
Combine the plain flour, golden caster sugar and a generous pinch of salt in a bowl.
4
Rub the cold butter into the mixture with your fingertips until it resembles moist breadcrumbs.
5
Scatter the crumb mix evenly over the apples, mounding it in the middle, then smooth with a fork.
6
Press the surface lightly with the back of the fork. Drag the fork gently across the top to make a pattern.
7
If desired, scatter rolled oats and demerara sugar evenly over the top.
8
Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the top is golden and the apples are tender when pierced with a knife.
9
Cool for 10 minutes before serving with double cream or custard.
